Upgraded Alarm at Stop & Shop
By Captain Matt Hollis
February 16, 2017
On Friday morning at 3:13am E104, TL14 and R31 was dispatched to 195 N. Bedford Road, Stop & Shop Supermarket for a commercial alarm. Car 2283(Chief Hughes) and E104 were the first arriving units. E104's crew made entry into the building and discovered a store employee complaining of difficulty breathing who was stating that there was a fire in the compressor room. The Mutual captain then advised command that there was a reported fire in the compressor room, to fill out the structure fire assignment and to get EMS to evaluate the employee that was having difficulty breathing. E104's crew made their way to the compressor room located in the rear of the store on the second floor of the storage room. E104's crew found a small fire in the compressor for the refrigeration units, high levels of Carbon Monoxide and a compressor oil and Freon leak. Command then relocated all apparatus to the rear of the building to the loading docks for better access to the scene. E104's crew made sure of no fire extended past the compressor units while the Mutual Captain requested a HAZ-MAT unit through command due to the Freon leak. Once determined that the fire was extinguished and there was no extension, crews isolated the effected area and made a sweep through the entire building to make sure it was completely evacuated. Units then waited outside for the WCDES HAZ-MAT team to arrive and evaluate the Freon leak. The HAZ-MAT team arrived at 4:36am, and quickly determined that all Freon had been expelled and placed absorbent pads on the compressor oil that had leaked. The Situation was placed under control by 2281(Chief Bueti) and units were in service at 5:17am.
